The Subtle Mind & A Damaged CD
Today, I tried to do the Subtle Mind exercise but the pleasant sounds of waves was replaced with hissing & cracking. I tried to outlast the noise but the noise won. I did the exercise without the CD using the book as a guide. This exercise was much easy to do because you don't have to change your focal image mid-meditation. I tried to concentrate on a perfectly still ocean also. I did loose focus once or twice but tried to bring my intent back on my breathing. I can understand the premise behind this exercise; by clearing our mind of the trivial around us, we can allow it time to heal and de-stress. This will lead to a healthier body as by now we all know, elevated stress levels can affect our immune system, parts of our brain, and even blood pressure. My only additional comment, it would have probably worked better if the CD wasn't damaged. See everyone in class!

Adrienne,
ReplyDeleteYikes! I experienced the same thing. The first time I ran over and turned it off. The second time I tried to breathe through it assuming it was part of a concentration exercise....lol but the third time I just put on my own music and went to town. A great experience all in all. I love to breathe and relax it really helps me to get back to center... Have a good week.
It must be the CD because mine did it too. That is so odd! You'd think that they would have listened to the CD before making a million copies. Anyhow, since I have hard time with these, the static did not help me at all!
ReplyDeleteI am wondering, if the noise was on purpose? Maybe the reason the CD cracked and hissed, was because it was trying to show us exactly how to tune out everything, and relax in spite of the world around us? Maybe I am wrong, but it is just a thought!
ReplyDeleteThe cracking definitely made me jump. Now, wouldnt they say if it startled you that you werent in the present? I guess I wasnt. Anyway, I did a lot better with this exercise as well. I really dislike the Loving-Kindness for 2 reasons - the numerous mental refocuses and the taking in of all strangers stresses and pains. Not my type of meditation.
ReplyDeleteAdrienne my cd is damaged also. I could hear a little bit then the noise came on. That is good that you go through the exercise without any problems and you thought it was fairly easy. I always lose focus because I think that I have a short attention span so I have to focus a little harder. Getting rid of extra noise around can make you feel better and you can hear yourself better.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading everyone's comment, I have to admit some of these exercises are difficult for me as well. I seem to do the best with visualization like the dark clouds breathing exercise and the one with the color spectrum. I guess that the trick is to find what works for you & then just practice :)
ReplyDeleteWay to improvise! Isn't that the story of our lives? We're always having to improvise, and trying to find a way to meditate/focus successfully is a part of that. Prior to this class, did you have any experience with this type of thing? Do you think you will use it in the future?
ReplyDeleteHi Adrienne,
ReplyDeleteI love your powerpoint, great job! As for commenting on your post about the exercise. I noticed everyone had the same problem with the C.D. I as well had to work through it and completed the exercise. I agree with what you commented on, we have to find what works for us and practice that. I do much better with visualizations as well then with the breathing exercise to still the mind. My mind is a monster to try and tame. ( lol )
